The headlines are already being written now: Area darkness creature gets turned into paste, locals baffled.

Vanitas finally realizes where he heard the name before - only once, because Eraqus had only explained what had happened to him once. The flash of light and keyblade appearing confirm it - this must be a new apprentice, the replacement for the boy that died to make Vanitas.

Vanitas isn't sure how he feels about any of this. He knows he is, because it's taking effort to keep his skin in place, but it's moving around too much to examine it.

"I'm not doing anything," he says before realizing Ventus is talking to his keyblade. That's weird. You're weird, Ventus. Eraqus and Aqua had talked about keyblades like they were alive, and it felt like the metaphorical friendship heart stuff that Vanitas wasn't the best at. Void Gear appears in his hand in turn, tip pointed at the ground, clean and free of blood, humming under his palm. The pupils of it's eyes are fixed on Ventus, even when Vanitas tilts it to look at the flat of it.

"He used to be mine," Vanitas says, and it has a question buried in it even he doesn't really know. Truthfully, Vanitas doesn't think about that boy much. It never goes anywhere, and he knows nothing about him. "Or something like that." What kind of Master was he? Was he like Eraqus?

Vanitas looks at the sky. It's sunset, which means it will be getting dark soon (oh you sweet summer child). If he's going to head anywhere to plan his next move (and get all the blood off his clothes), the old house on the hill seems like the safest bet. "We should get moving."
